- There is the ruins of an old house in Ballinvally. There is nothing to be seen now but the four walls. This house was thatched and it is believed that it was the first thatched house in Ireland. The land surrounding this old house is owned by a man named Brannigan. This house consisted of two rooms, a bedroom and a kitchen. The fire place was situated at the wall which divided the room from the kitchen. There was no chimney on this old house, there was a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out. Half doors are still common in this district. In former years people made rushcandles and burned them.
