- Until about 80 years ago very large meetings were held at Ballinafad, about three miles from Strokestown, during the last week of August every year. The meeting lasted a week. It began on Sunday with a hurling match. Cattle horse sheep pig and ass fairs were held the following three days ie Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. Hose Races were held on the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday
Horses were brought from all over ireland to compete here. Specially good horses came from Galway and Belfast. On one occasion a man was wheeling a barrow of turf in the immediate neighbour-hood. He was about to throw the barrow of turf when the horses in a particular race were about one mile from the winning post. He trew the barrow of turf and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
