- Hedge SchoolsA century ago there was no national schools. A rude shelter was set up here and there to which the people used to come. This was called a hedge school. There was one of these schools set up in Ball na Mona. The school house which was a barn was owned by a man named Devitt. The teacher's name was Alick Sweeney. In Masshill there dwelt a hedge teacher named Tom Devaney. He lived in a barn. Every une(?) evening each scholar used to bring two sods of turf. They would put down a big fire and read their books by the light of the fire. He used to be us in his feet always. The pupils used to bring in big stones to sit on. They had no pencils as we have but instead they used to burn sticks and write with them. The only maps they had were home made. The people used to go to school until they were twenty years or more.
