- About ninety years ago there was no salt to be got in this district. As the people could not do without salt they had to travel to Skreen for it. The nearest place where salt could be found was at Salt-port where there were salt-pans. These salt-pans were on the brink of the sea and when a spring-tide came they became filled up with sea water. Then the sun evaporated the water and the salt remained. At the next tide they gathered more salt so that there was sufficient salt for the people of the district. Then they sold it at a high price. The place is still called Salt-port. It is the townland of Derk.
