  1. Long ago, that is when the penal laws were in force in Ireland, mass used to be said under a white thorn bush on an old boreen in the townland of Toureen. The bush was flat on top, and at its base there were low flat stones. An alder bush is now growing beside it. It is growing beside a house owned by Mr. Edward Lonergan, and he would not cut the bush because he was afraid that something unlucky would happen to him.
