- There were a good many travelling people long ago. 'Big Hughie' was one of the travelling folk some years ago. He was a big, fat, lazy man, pretending to be deaf. He used to say he was a native of Co Dublin, and that his home was at the Ten Mile Bush. He had a great constitution, he purchased his own tea and everything he would eat. He travelled this district mostly.
He gathered potatoes and meal and sold them in the shops where he bought his supplies. He would eat a feed of bacon just warmed on the fire.
The tea he would drink would be as thick as jelly.
He was particular about the house he would sleep in. His bed was straw. People used to like having him for a night as he was great company telling stories about the 'Bog of Allen' and County Dublin and other far away places.
