Nor far from the lake stands the remains of a cottage which is very neatly built and must have been very ornamental. Some stories are told about this cottage but I think they are mostly exaggerations.
A walk leads from the cottage to the top of the mount and when you reach the top a splendid view of the district is to be had. You can see the most of the Cooley peninsula with Dundalk Bay lying at its foot. Here is the point from which Cuculian is said to have surveyed the approach of Maeve's army and certainly he would not have selected a better vantage point.
Underneath the hill he is said to have his secret retreat but at present there is no visible entrance to a cave.
This wood was the resting place of many of the irregular soldiers during the [1923?] civil war, and it was ahelled by the Free state army. Later when the army entered it they found of trace of their foes as tehy silently melted away during the previous night. (A [nice?] retreatThe owner of the mansion carried on the business of "Lime burner" and supplied a great portion of the northern farmers with lime from the kilns which are in the Deerpark townland(continues on next page)
