  1. A hedge school once existed in this district, in the town land of Shanbally and exactly where Mrs Edward O'Toole is living. The name of the teacher was Matt Flood. He was a stranger. He lodged exactly where he taught school. They were paid by the parents of the children every month. The principal subjects taught were , Reading, Writing, and History. There was no Irish taught in these schools. Their attitude was good towards Irish and Irish culture but they were oppressed by the Government which then ruled. Writing was done on a slate. The pupils were arranged by putting the larger ones in the back and the smaller ones in the front. The master used a blackboard sometimes. This man almost lived here.
