    and a kitchen and the walls two to three feet thick. They were built of chopped up hay mixed with mud which helped to keep the stones together.
    Each apartment had one small window measuring about one foot square on the outside and sloping in measuring about three feet inside. Sometimes they had glass and more times not. The door frame and door were very roughly made and were sawn across the centre so as the top part could be open leaving the lower part shut.
