- It is usually from Christmas to the end of Shrove that marriages take place in Beare Island, and also during Summer. There are not any months or days thought unlucky for marrying except Lent and Advent, but Shrove is the principal period. In former times matches were made in the district but there were not any made recently. There is a dowry given in most occasions especially if the property is big. Stock is rarely given nowadays like former times when cows, sheep etc. were given but goods are given as presents.
Marriages never took place in the house, it is always performed in the church and a wedding takes place in the house. During the wedding feast friends and neighbours are invited to the house where they sing and dance and amuse themselves in every way especially during the night and very often the reception carries on after midnight. Straw boys do not visit the house in Beare Island neither do they have wedding processions except those who are in the wedding and it is by motor car or trap they go when the journey is long.(continues on next page) - Collector
