  1. There was a great famine in this locality in the year eighteen and forty six and forty seven. The potatoes did not grow and the people began to die in great numbers. Thousands of people were dying with the hunger. The potatoes decayed and afterwards in the pits and they had no potatoes to sow for the following year.
