He fell in love with a Lord's daughter. He knew that she was "Sweethearting" with some big bodach. Bohannon decided to get rid of him in some way. He entered the service of her father as gardener. One Summer's day when the roses were in full bloom who did Bohannon see strolling down the garden but the bodach. On his way down the garden he saw a beautiful rose, one which he thought worthy of his sweetheart. He did not dare to pull it. but decided to go in for his sweetheart, bring her out into the garden to the place where this special rose was and let her pull it herself. In order that he might recognise it again he placed his hat on it and walked in for the young lady. When Bohannon got him out of sight he lifted the hat pulled the rose and placed there in its stead some 'insignificant flower.' Then he disappeared and waited for the result. In a few minutes the young lady and gentleman came towards the place where the hat was. When they reached the place the gentleman lifted the hat in order that his sweetheart might pull the rose. When she saw what was under the hat she was insulted and told the gentleman off. He tried to calm her and said that Bohannon must be in the garden as no one was capable of doing such a thing but Bohannon. Bohannon came forward and introduced himself. He apologised to the lady but the gentleman refused to accept. He said he would clear the stain placed on his honour by a challenge to some game of skill. The lady agreed and Bohannon agreed. Bohannon said the only thing he could do was jump (long jump). It was decided that they should jump the next morning
