   All that did not die of starvation died of yellow fever and small pox.

   Blight came on the potatoes when they were growing.

   A small quantity of seed potatoes was sent over by England. People had to live on Indian Meal, Dock leaves, grass and anything they could find to keep them alive. Mrs Murphy of the hotel and her family were very kind to the starving people.

   It was at this time that people through starvation turned Protestants to get Indian Meal because the Protestants of Oughterard gave it to them for nothing and the starvating people were glad to get it

   During the famine in Oughterard a lot of people died of hunger and spotted fever. The English Government opened soup-houses in Oughterard, one in the town, one in Glann, one in Glen Gabhla and one in Castle Kirk - an island in Lough Corrib. They gave bread, biscuits and
