- Tinkers go from house to house asking alms. They usually ask milk, eggs, butter, meat, bread and potatoes. They also gather old clothes. The best of these they keep for their families and they sell the others for the making of paper.Tinkers live in canvas tents. These usually set up on the sides of bye-roads or disused old roads. For fires they gather twigs and sticks and borrow bags of turf from the farmers. They make their fires on the sides of the road beside the tents.For beds they cover the floor of the tents with hay and straw and on this they sleep.(continues on next page)
