  1. Long ago the people had no way in baking bread. They used to bake it on the tongs. some of the people used to bake it on lids also. They used to make cakes out of bran and oatmeal and yellow-meal. The most bread they used to eat is boxty and potato cakes and they used to bake it on lids. Some more used to make them in old buckets hard oatmeal cakes and the old people used to call them Tomsteels. The old people never used to put soda in the cakes and never used to rise.
