  1. Long ago there used to be very big fairs in Straid. There used to be a lot of tents and stalls in it and pots of potatoes and beef used to be boiled and you could get your dinner at one o'clock. About a week before the fair every man used to cut a black thorn stick and put it in the chimney seasoning for the fight on the fair day. In the evening some two townslands would have a fight. Some of them were so badly wounded as they had to be carried home. There was a man once and he got a blow on the head and he died in a quarter of an hour.
