- (continued from previous page)was passing a lonely bit of the road, he saw a light, and he knew there was a house there, so he thought he would like to get lodging, as he was very tired. He went in and asked if he could get lodging in a stable or outhouse until morning. The man of the house said that he would give him lodging in the big house if he would stay, but that the house was haunted, and that he himself was leaving it for the night.
The soldier said that he would stay. The man of the house left him plenty to eat and drink and some good books to read.
He sat reading till 12 o'clock, then he heard a loud noise, and a coffin came down out of the ceiling and was just moving up again, but the soldier jumped up an sat on the lid, saying: Hold on me boy, till I see what's in there," and he took off the lid, and the corpse of the old gentleman of the house was in it, and the soldier took him out, and warmed him at the fire till he knocked talk out of him, and he asked him what was the matter.
