- Long ago the people used to make bread out of oat meal. Some of them milled their own meal at home between two stones. Others brought it to the mill. Potato cake was very common long ago but is seldom eaten now. Most people used to bake bread on a griddle. If a person were expecting a visitor she would make a currant cake for him.The people of the place used to go to the town regularly every year just before Christmas day to buy flour. A stone of flour was usually bought but if a person bought two stone she was regarded as the richest person in the place.
