In the long Summer evenings, it was the custom of the old men of the place to go and sit and smoke their "dudeens" with him even though he would not notice them. One fine mid-summer's night when they were going to see him they heard the music and when they came to the bush they heard the old man talking to the fairies and the music playing, but there was not a trace of the old fellow. The fairy revel continued until the break of day and the men stayed there spellbound. They entered the house in the morning and found him stretched on his sugane chair, dead, with his fiddle clasped under his chin and his bow just in the position in which it used to be when he was playing.
This story was got from Mrs. Cotter, Shanacashel, Kilmichael, Macroom.
