- The oldest school about here is Loughross[?] N. S built in 1839.Hedge schools existed here up till then, when Loughross[?] was built. A hedge school existed in a byre of Paddy McGorty's now owned by a man named Patrick Flynn. It was built of mud. There were no seats, so the pupils had to make themselves comfortable in hay or bedding of the beasts. A blackboard was never used either. "Hedge School: was the local name for them. The teachers were all men who untrained and ignorant as they were, taught as best they could and made some very fine scholars. The teachers were not strangers. The teacher was taken by the pupils to their homes on turn.
School was not carried on in Farmers Houses. This was through fear of the police. The police came to the house and not to the out offices first. When the police would have searched the house and reached.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
