- Rushes or "Rishes" are plentiful in the valleys of this locality and by its many streams. Children love to pull them. They eat the white end and call it butter.
They take them in groups of three and make long plaits.
They are arranged in bundles of about 70 to 100, tied neatly and used as a whip for childrens games.
By plaiting them among the fingers a little basket is made. It is called a "Cat's Cradle".The farmer finds many uses for them.
With them he thatches his turf and some times his out-offices if hay is scarce.
He throws them around the farm-yard to make manure.
He uses them for bedding for farm-animals.
Hay ricks &stacks are thatched with them.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
