- My great grandfather Matthew Conlon worked at the coopering in Clonmult. My grandfather followed in the same workshop. My father worked at the trade till about twenty five years ago. Owing to the establishment of Creameries "firkins" were no longer in demand.
The articles made included :- Firkins, churns, tubs, butts. The churns were of various sizes - made to accomadate from one to twelve cows. The churns were made of oak.
Firkins were by far the greatest part of the trade. A firkin held seventy five pounds of butter. Firkins were made of ash and had sally hoops. A butt was half a firkin. Unlike other tradesmen coopers(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
