- Many years ago there lived in County Cavan a young man who was very fond of card-playing. I do not know in what part of the county he lived. It is said he often went miles from his home to Gamble. At length he became very poor. Then he heard that if he went to America he would win many prizes in card-playing tests. He sold his farm and bought his passage to America. He set out from County Cavan and went by train to Belfast. He landed in Belfast at about six o'clock on a winter's morning and snow was falling heavily. He knew nobody in the city except one man who kept a boarding house. He made his way to this house and when he went in he saw a number[?] playing cards. He asked leave of the landlord to allow him to join with them. The landlord told him not to as they were only a bunch of robbers. The landlord went away to and the room and the unfortunate joined(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
