    with a gun, he resolved to give Fitz Harris a chance for his life and liberty. The chance was this; he should have his life and be set free if from forty paces distance he were able to split a bullet in two halves on the edge of a side blade suspended against a wall. The chance for liberty was small but such was the prisoner’s skill with a gun, that after he fired, the two halves of the bullet were found at the foot of the wall and Fitz Harris left Horetown and Sir John Moore’s presence a free man and lived for many years after.
    Another man who was reported to be in command was Martin Crosbie of Haresmeade, Foulksmills, of a number of insurgents at the battle of Horetown, June 1798. He and his father, Nicholas Crosbie, were buried in Arcandrisk graveyard, in Barntown district, near the banks of the Slaney on the eleventh of June 1798.
    We do not know how Martin Crosbie died whether he was killed at the battle or shot after being courtmartialled.
    Two stories are told of the death of his father as related to me about the year 1917 by the late Stephen Stafford of Assagart then an old man over eighty years of age. Stephen Stafford said Nicholas Crosbie complained to the English
