  1. The potatoes were not sown broadcast like grain, they were sown in ridges. When the potato crop failed, the people had to eat Indian corn or whole meal. People that had no money to buy that food, died of starvation.
    Government relief reached the district, but it was too late because the people were nearly all dead. Great sickness followed the hunger. People talk about other periods of famine and the distress due to the failure of the potatoe crop.
