- In olden times shops were not very common. There were only three shops in the town of Borrisokane. On Sundays after Mass buying and selling used to be carried on. Work was often given in exchange for goods.
The words "tick" "charge" and "cant"[?] were connected with buying and selling. When a person bought anything from another person without paying for it, he was said to have got it on "tick". In the olden times hucksters used to go round selling their wares to the people. Men used to go round buying feathers and rags and people often got a lot of money for a bag of feathers. Various coins have now gone out of use, such as, five shilling pieces and sovereigns. In this district different coins are referred to as "tanner" for a sixpence, "bob" for a shilling(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
