Ar an leathanach seo

  1. In olden times all the old houses had thatched roofs. It was a very rare thing to see a slated one. The thatch was got from wheaten or oaten straw and sometimes from rye. In most houses there used to be a "settle-bed" which was always placed against a wall and was used as a seat when not been used as a bed. The fire place was always in the gable wall but sometimes it was to be seen in a side wall. Turf and wood were used for the fire. The front of the chimney was generally made of clay and wattles. In most houses in olden times there were half-doors but nearly all those have disappeared now. All the floors were made of gravel and stones. In some of the houses there was no glass in the windows, except two wooden shutters which were closed at night and opened in the day-time. The means used for giving light
