- (continued from previous page)any rate Lyons of Croom House closed and locked the church door and would allow no mass to be said there unless 'young Fr. Hartnett' was appointed. The Bishop came out to Croom on Sunday morning and found the doors of the church nailed up fast against him. Mrs Lyons of Croom House had a talk with him and the upshot of it was that 'young Fr. Hartnett' was made P.P.of Croom. He was P.P. of Croom till the day of his death in 1861. (Ed. O'Connell Carrigan Croom)
Faoi Deiscréid:- When the late Mrs. Lyons, wife of the present owner of Croom House, Capt. J. D. Lyons, was being buried, the present Bishop of Limerick, Dr. Keane presided at her obsequies. The reason assigned by the people hereabouts, for the Bishop's presence at the funeral, was that at some former time when the parish priest of Croom wanted a site where he might build a parochial house the then bishop asked Lyons of Croom House for a suitable field in his farm for that purpose. Lyons refused curtly and definitely and the Bishop-on dit-in acknowledging Lyons' refusal remarked 'that the Parish Priest of Croom had mansions when the Lyonses lived in bohawns on the banks of the Maigue."
