- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)travelling man, named Charley Conway, commonly known as "barefooted Charlie" used frequently visit this locality. He was very well known and much respected. he was of respectable parents, well-educated + refined. However, he had one lamentable weakness - excessive drinking. Once, when his mother was advising him against drink she said, he would one day "carry the bag on his back". Charlie eventually became a beggar and (eventually) remembering his mother's words never "carried his bag on his back" but always under his arm.
He never wore shoes, summer or winter hence the name "Barefooted" Charlie. He was very proud and was slow to ask alms. He had a nephew - Father Tierney - in Cork city. Charlie died in Donoghmore + had a respectable funeral.
Bill Driscoll, another well known character was very quarrelsome when under the influence of drink. It used take three or four policemen to arrest him when he had to be taken to the barrack. He was frequently imprisoned for assault on the police. He died near Nadd, Banteer about 20 yrs. ago and was buried in Clonmeen Graveyard.
Bill was a tinsmith by trade and could be seen frequently on the country roads. He drove in a donkey and cart. He used to treat the poor donkey very cruelly beating him savagely on the head(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
