- The houses long ago were very much different to the houses at the present day. They were low thatched houses and consisted of a kitchen and a bedroom. The thatch was sometimes made of reed, mixed with heath. Very few houses were slated and the slate used was small and rough. It was got at Drimoleague. If the family was large a settle bed was kept in the kitchen. This was closed up by day and was the shape of a seat, and at night it was opened out. It was against the wall opposite the door.
Camp beds were in the bedroom, these were made of timber and were covered all over with a hood made of timber, except in the front. The covering was called the "taister." The bottom of the beds were filled with straw which was covered with a feather tick and a twill sheet. Home-made blankets and quilts that were quilted on a frame was the bed-covering.
