- What a great disadvantage it was to our ancestors in olden times. People had to purchase their goods at Castletown which was the nearest town to Beare Island because there was only one shop in this district. Very little business was carried on after Mass because it was a custom in those times to purchase double the quantity Saturday evening for Sunday. It is still practised very little, and groceries are the chief articles sold.
