- The local fairs are held in the towns of Urlingford, Rathdowney and Ballinakill. Buyers continue to transact business at farmers' houses, but I have not heard of business being carried on at cross-roads. The fairs are once a month.
The town fairs are held in the streets but in the city there is a special fair-place or Fair Green. When an animal is sold, the buyer gets luck money from the seller. This is calculated by about a sixpence on sheep, a half-crown on cattle, and ten shillings on horses.
When a bargain has been made, the people show their agreement by clapping their palms and and having drinks together. When the animals are sold, they are marked with raddle and the hair cut with a scissors on the flank, and sometimes by mud.- Bailitheoir
