  1. In olden times houses were built of stones and mortar with a mud floor. They were built with straw and rushes laid on rough hewn rafters. All the old houses had a bed - in the kitchen. The owner of the house slept in it for fear of robbers coming in and stealing his meal or flour. he kept a pitcfork by his side and when any robbers would come in he would stab them with his pitchfork. The fire place was nearly always in the jam wall that is the wall between the room and kitchen. The front of the chimney and plastered with mud from the road. A barrell was placed on top for a chimney.
There was an old woman long ago called the Mary the Uthain she lived in a fox-hole with a whin roof on it. She had a fire and a table and a bed in it, she was about three feet high.
