In olden times houses were built of clay, mud and stones, with long sticks for rafters.
They were thatched with straw and rushes. The straw and rushes were grown locally.
There was a bed in the kitchen beside the fire in every house. It was called a settle bed. It was a seat by day and a bed by night. Some of the people had their fires in the middle of the floor and a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out. Sometimes rain would come down and put them out, and wind would blow sparks through the house and put it on fire.
The burned sticks and turf on the fire. They used rushlights and candles to show them light at night. Candles were made locally in the district long ago.
