- The old method of butter making before the barrel came into use was with a churn and staff attached to it. The churn was a circular wooden vessel about four feet high with a circumference of about three feet at the bottom and eighteen inches at the top. The staff was a long wooden piece of wood about a foot in diameter. On the top of the churn was a cover with a hole in the centre through which the handle passed. This was worked by the hand in such a manner that the cream was converted into butter in a very short time.
In olden times there was a lot of superstition following the making of butter. While the churning was in progress the housekeepers then would by no means allow a bit of fire to be removed from the house.
