“There was a man long ago.”
There was a man long ago. He lived in Gorteea in the parish of Templeglantine. He was a great sportsman and a good fiddle player. One day he was fishing. On his return home he fell across a stone and hurt his foot. When he got home his leg was swollen. They brought the Doctor to him and he said to bathe the leg that it was only a sprain. Every night he kept everyone in the house up with him. After a week or so they thought he was getting better but he only got up around the house raving, and he told them that he could not get better as the room was full of brown women and that he could not sleep with them. They used to rise up the curtains of the bed and pull at his toes. One night he told his sister to warm some milk. When she had it warmed he came into the kitchen and told her that he wanted a shirt. She got it for him and put him back to bed and when she came to the fire the milk was gone. She put it down three times. After it going the second time she watched it and she said the devil would pick their bones if they would carry it again.
