   All that ever went to Connelly's school were good spellers and good writers. Connelly used to make ink out of elder berries and this was the ink that was used at the school. He used to write the sentence or headline on a leaf and past it on the well and the scholars used to copy it while Connelly stood over them with a stick. The same way the making of figures was worked the teacher doing the sum on a leaf and pasting it on the wall. The greatest ornaments to be seen upon the walls of the school were therefore the sentences written in the big round hand-
