  1. Every man who has land sets a good deal of potatoes, especially the big farmers, they set about two acres of potatoes. First, the ground is manured with sea-weed. Then it is ploughed, and then harrowed, after which drills are made. Then the potatoes are cut into parts called "sciollans", by women. They leave an eye or tow in each "sciollan", otherwise they will not grow. When the stalks are up about an inch they "earth" them, and after a while they second "earth" them.
