- Altar Linen 31-3-38Altar Cloths - There must be three cloths on the altar for Holy Mass. The Altar linen represents the linen in which Our Lord's Body was wrapped in for burial.Corporal - A piece of linen about twelve inches square, which the Priest places on the Altar, and upon which the Sacred Vessels rest.Purificator - A square piece of linen with which the Priest purifies the Chalice and Paten.Pall - A small square linen envelope, stiffened with cardboard, with which the Priest covers the Chalice during Mass.Communion Cloth - A linen cloth laid on the Altar rails out of respect, and for fear of an accident to the Blessed Sacrament.
