- (continued from previous page)night the giant came down and cut the nexts of the girls who were at the stock thinking them to be the strangers. Leeshy and her two sisters rose before daylight and got away safely. They travelled onwards through the woods until they came to a gentleman’s castle on the top of a hill but as yet there was a river between and the castle. Leeshy went down to the river, touched it with her wee green bag and there came a lovely green pad across the river. They landed at the castle. The giant took them to the three lady’s daughters when he saw the ‘gauld’ bands around their necks. he looked up Leeshy as a very sprightly and said to her “I’ll give you my eldest son to your eldest sister in marriage, with large property if you will ‘stale’ me the half-moon from the other giant on the hill, “I will try” said Leeshy.”
She waited for a calm night and she took with her a wee bag of salt. She went down to the river and touched it with the wee green bag and a lovely pad led right up to the ‘chimney’ of the giant’s castle.
When Leeshy was in the ‘chimley’ she listened awhile and she heard the giant saying to his maid to get on the porridge pot for the supper. Leeshy watched her putting on the ‘mail’ and when the maid put in a handful of ‘mail’ Leeshy dropped down some salt. When the porridge was made the giant began to sup it and he complained of it being very salt. ‘Not a ‘here’ more salty then any other night said the maid. Leeshy heard him scrap the pot and she said to herself ‘I have him at last” A while after this he complained of being very dry and he sent the maid to the well for a ‘pail’ of water but she complained of it being very dark. The giant said to her “You can take the half-moon with you” Leeshy then ran and seated herself at the well and when the maid was lifting the water Leeshy tumbled her in and ran off with the half-moon.
