The houses in olden times were covered with thatch. The thatch was got from wheaten straw.
The houses in olden times had a bed in the kitchen called a "Settle Bed". The fireplace was always in the centre of the floor. The chimney was made of stones but sometimes it was made of clay and wattles.
Half-doors were common in the district in former times.
Turf was generally used for fire. Home made candles and dipped rushes were used for lights.
