- Old people do not tell stories of the Great Famine of 1846-47. The people in this district suffered severely from it.
Before the Famine this district was very thickly populated. People do not point out sites of houses then occupied and now in ruins.
The blight came as a plague and decayed the potatoes in the ground and in the pits and a great number of people died of starvation on account of the plague.
People starved themselves to save any good potatoes for seed for the following year.
