- Three meals were taken in days gone by. One early in the morning, another at mid day and another at seven o'clock. In early days they used to work for about three hours before eating anything.
The first meal consisted of stirabout, oaten bread, potato cake, and milk. The second meal was potatoes and sometimes herrings and they used to eat them around the basket. The third meal was stirabout and sometimes potatoes.
The bread eaten in those days was oaten bread and potato cake. They used to wet oaten meal with water and make it into shape and they used leave it before the fire until it used gets hard.
The meat taken in those days was American bacon and very little of it. Only a couple of days a week meat used to be taken. The same customs used to be carried on in those days as now, such as eating two eggs on Easter Sunday, playing games on Hollow Eve and killing fowl of all kinds for Christmas.
Tea was brought to Ireland first about (thirty) sixty years ago. Very little of it was used. One pound of tea would last in a house from Christmas to Christmas. Saucepans and noggins which were wooden were the only vessels used in those days.- Collector
