of gravel in some places there are planks held together with wooden pegs the planks when dug up are generally in perfect condition. Then there is an other old road leading from Rathcline Abbey to Ballinakill this too runs through bog about half its length and is also covered from a depth of two to three feet. There is also a road in use to day branching from the main road to Longford about a quarter of a mile from Lanesboro' and joining it again, one mile further on, it is called the Line. It is said this road was made about the time of the famine to give relief to the stricken people. The rate of pay was very small from threepence to sixpence per day. The women also helped breaking stones.
