  1. Old schools
Long ago when there were no National schools, men would go round the district teaching in this place and that place and they were called "Poor Scholars."
One of the places round here where school used to be was in a barn belonging to Mr Callan.
These teacher's or "Poor Scholars" were not paid from the government, the way they are nowadays but they were paid a penny or two by each pupil every week.
In this school where Mr Callan was teaching, the boys and girls used to be jumping and whoever could jump the highest would get prizes of pins.
Mr Callan was a great grandfather of Mr P. Callan who is at present living in Irish Grange.
