  2. Palm trees, laurel, and holy, elder have a special significance for the Irish people. The palm and Elder are reverently associated with Our Lord's death, as it is believed that the Cross was made of timber from an Elder tree. On account of this the elder is seldom used for fuel. The Palm blessed on Palm Sunday is hung in the house usually over blessed pictures. The holy and Laurel are also associated with Our Lord, and are hung up in the houses at Christmas in honour of his birth.
