  1. In olden times the bread was made from wheat grown locally. The flour was made locally in the mills. The different kinds of bread were called, Potato bread, and oaten meal bread. Buck bread was also made in the district. It was made from grated potatoes, and was eaten in or about the eleventh of November after the digging of the potatoes. The sign of the cross was cut on the cake when made. Bakers and griddles were the names given to the vessels in which the bread was baked. Special kinds of bread were made on occasions such as Christmas Day and Easter.
I, Mary Hayes, Ballynavin, Borrisokane, got this from my mother, Mrs Hayes, Ballynavin, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary.
