    he carried a root in his hand. "What are you holding?", asked his wife. "An old root I pulled out of the ground. I have brought it in for the fire". "Is it making gaps in the quick hedges you are?" she said. "Not as all". said he. "I have the fort rooted up to set potatoes in it". When she heard this she was frightened. "The good people will follow us" she said. "Never before did I hear of a man setting potatoes in a fort". Many and many is the time I have seen them riding down by the hill. I have heard their fiddles and their fifes, their shouts and their laughter".
