    stick and raising it up discovered a door which opened immediately and calling her companions they entered and saw a long passage. They followed it and when they reached the end they were in another fort and Mary Carroll picked one stick and immediately she fell to the ground. The other children ran to give her help but they could not raise her. Not long after some men came and brought her home.
    She was in bed for six weeks and never spoke nor opened her eyes. She recovered but nobody could recognise her. She was very tall and thin and within another six weeks she was dead.
