- Cromwell invaded the south of Ireland and did much damage there. He went along the roads and burned all the houses as they were all thatched at that time. In Ballinona where Captain Donlan lived there were two families whose names were Meades. He got all of them beheaded. He closed all the wells as he went along and shot all the cattle in the fields. He stuck the old people with spears.
- Castlemartyr can justly be numbered among the interesting historic places in Ireland. The fertile soil of the countryside, the demesne in particular, made it a coveted possession in such a way that many battles were fought over it.
